Canon 5D Mark IV is a Full-Frame DSLR Camera. It has a 31.7-Megapixel Sensor Resolution. 5D Mark IV comes with a 3.2-inch Fixed Touchscreen LCD. Despite the screen being fixed, I loved navigating through the menu.

Nikon D850 Quick Summary
Nikon D850 has a 46-Megapixel Sensor Resolution.
It also has a 3.2-Inch Screen. But, unlike to Canon 5D Mark IV, Nikon D850 has a Tilting Screen. It made my difficult angle shot east to take.
It has an impressive number of 153 autofocus points. And out of which, 99 are of cross-type.
I loved the Coverage of the Autofocus Points on the Entire Screen. You can record 4K Videos at 30 FPS.
The Low-Light Performance of the Nikon D850 is also excellent. Despite its Smaller ISO Range, I was impressed by the Quality of Photos throughout the Range.

I will compare and help you decide which Camera has a better photography performance.
Sensor
Canon 5D Mark IV has a 31.7-Megapixel Resolution Sensor. It has a Full-Frame Sensor. That allows you to take pictures and print them on billboard size canvas.
The Depth of Field of Canon 5D Mark IV allows you to take pictures with a sharp subject and blurred background.
On the other hand, Nikon D850 has a 46.7-Megapixel Sensor. With More Megapixels come more Clarity. But you might see some grains at Higher ISO.
Essentially, I could Zoom and Crop the Image Freely without Losing any Quality. Thanks to its Processor, that solved Graining issues until late ISO 24000.
In comparison, we come to know that Nikon D850 has a better sensor and processor than Canon 5D Mark IV.
Processor
Canon 5D Mark IV uses a DIGIC 6+ Image Processor. For your information, the processor is helpful in three main areas: Image Sensing, Buffer Handling, and Noise Reduction.
In my opinion, the Image Sensing Ability of DIGIC 6+ is Excellent.
It still gives you Better Low-Light Performance than many cameras recently launched on the market.
The noise reduction on Canon Mark IV was the real deal for me.
In Dim Light Conditions at the Mid-ISO Range, it would output Excellent Low Light Photos with little to no Noise.
As far as the buffer goes, it is slow.
I felt restricted when shooting in burst mode. It takes some time to clear the buffer.

On the other hand, Nikon D850 uses Expeed 5 Image Processor. This is a New and Better Processor than DIGIC 6+.
But, the gap between the Two Releases is Only a Year.
This is impressive to me because, in a year, Nikon leaped.
Along with Noise Reduction, Expeed 5 can Handle a Large Buffer Size compared to DIGIC 6+.
In Conclusion, Nikon D850 has a Better Processor than Canon 5D Mark IV.
Thanks to Nikon’s large buffer size and noise reduction ability across the ISO range.
AutoFocus
Canon 5D Mark IV offer you 61 Autofocus Points. Out of which 45 are Cross-Type Points.
They are all arranged in the center, so I couldn’t focus on the corner of the screen.
I had to place my subject on the far left or far right, leaving some gaps from the corners. But, I did it to only test these points to their limits.
In Real Life, it will be rare that I can only focus on the corner of the screen and not adjust myself.
Despite this, I am impressed by the Fast Autofocus in Canon 5D Mark IV. Its Speed and Accuracy are Excellent.
On the Other Hand, Nikon D850 offers 153 Autofocus Points. Out of which 99 are Cross-Type.
Nikon’s Cross-Type Points are more than the Total Number of points in the Canon.
It offers two modes in autofocus, AF-S and AF-C modes.
AF-S mode is Autofocus for Stationary Objects, and AF-C is for continuously moving objects.
And people like Wildlife Photographers can Benefit from it as well.
Along with that, Nikon D850 also offers Focus Stacking.
But, in my experience, the focus stacking Works Best in Dynamic Autofocus mode rather than 3D Focus Mode.
Because of this, the Camera has a Problem Tracing the subject coming toward the Camera.
Having multiple Autofocus Options is great for various shooting scenarios.
In Conclusion, Nikon D850 offers more options in autofocus than Canon 5D Mark IV.

Image Stabilization
Both of the Cameras Do not have Image Stabilization. I will suggest you choose a camera Lens with Built-In Image Stabilization.
Shooting Speed
The Shooting Speed of a Camera depends on the Buffer Size of the Camera. And Buffer Size is the Number of Photos a Camera can Take in a Single Session of Burst Shoot.
Canon 5D Mark IV offers a Buffer Size is 17 Raw shots at 7 FPS. In my opinion, 7 FPS is not a Good Speed for Sports or Wildlife Photography.
But, I think it is more than enough for Wedding or Portrait Photographers.
In opposition, Nikon D850 has a Buffer Size of 51 Raw Shots at 7 FPS.
Again, 7 fps is not a good number.
But I can compensate for that by taking 51 continuous shots.
In Conclusion, Nikon D850 has an Excellent Shooting Speed opposite to Canon 5D Mark IV. Even though both cameras have the same 7 FPS Shooting Speed.

Exposure
I used to think that exposure is dependent on aperture only. But, there are two more important factors contributing to the overall direction. These are ISO Sensitivity and Shutter Speed.
And when I talk about the Exposure of a Camera, I talk about the Photo Quality of a Camera over various exposure ranges.
The Canon 5D Mark IV has an ISO Sensitivity Range of 100 to 32,000. And as you move to Higher ISO, the Noise Reduction works better.
But, after ISO 25,000, I could notice grains in the low light photos.
The Shutter Speed ranges from 1/8000 to 30 sec. All this contributes to an excellent low-light image. After 25,000 ISO, the photos started to grain and lost the details.
But I rarely use ISO 25,000 on any camera.
Nikon D850 offers an ISO Range of 64 – 25,600.
This means that the Camera will hold you back from Graining your photos as much as it can.
But, even at ISO 25600, you don’t start to lose details. That is pretty cool.
In Conclusion, I consider Nikon D850 a better camera than Canon 5D Mark IV because it does not lose details at ISO 25,600.

Here, I will dive deep into the Video Recording features available in Each Camera.
This will help you decide which Camera you should pick for videography.
4K Video
Canon 5D Mark IV only allows you to have 1.7X Cropped 4K Recording at 30 FPS.
But, when I went through user reviews about 4K of Canon 5D Mark IV, it was mostly disappointing. And some people were defending Canon as well.
So to clear out the confusion for you, I did some research and what I found was this:
If you want to Shoot Small Clips of around 3 to 5 Minutes, 4K of Canon 5D Mark IV does the job pretty well.
But if you want to Shoot Video on a Proper 4K Resolution, it will be disappointing to work with the film.
In opposition, Nikon D850 Lets you take 4K Resolution Recording Without Any Crop at 30 FPS.
But, at ISO above 6400, I started to notice some graining in the shadows.

This is the second point where the Canon 5D Mark IV disappointed a lot of users. It can only record up to 60 FPS at 1080p.
The good thing with Full HD Recording is that you can use HDR Technology with 1080p.

No doubt about it.
5D Mark IV allows you to take a 120 FPS Video or slow-motion video 720p.
On the other side, Nikon D850 can Take Slow-Motion Videos at 1080p.

The Video Quality is Excellent. Also, the file size of the Nikon D850 is smaller than Canon 5D Mark IV.

Here, I will go through all the Extra Features that make a Camera Stand out from Another Camera.
Screen/Display
Camera Screens are Nowadays Helping Camera users to achieve more than just live view. 5D Mark IV allows its User to Navigate the Canon Menu System. The Canon 5D Mark IV screen measures 3.2 inches. It is a touchscreen LCD.
The display is clear, and you can tap to take a picture or double-tap to focus.
I liked the idea of a secondary screen on top to show quick status.
On the other hand, Nikon D850 also has a 3.2-Inch Screen LCD. But, it has More Resolution than 5D Mark IV.
Frankly speaking, both Cameras are Almost Equal in every aspect. There is no noticeable difference.
Weight
I feel that Canon and Nikon Cameras Grip Very Well in my Hands. Both are Splash and Dust Resistant. Both Cameras measure Almost Equal in Size.
But, Nikon D850 is 100 Grams Heavier than the 5D Mark IV.
A 100 grams does not matter much on paper. But, When I Picked up both the Cameras, I Immediately Felt the Difference.
After Approximately an Hour of Holding Them in your Hands, you feel like putting them down. But to conclude, it won’t make much of a difference in the long run.
Ergonomics/Comfort
This is the only feature that makes a camera stick to the user for a long time. And I think the ergonomics of Both the cameras are pretty good.
It depends on what you want from ergonomics.
If you want all the Settings Near your Thumb, then Canon is your Camera.
But if you only want some of the Main Settings like ISO Near your Thumb. If you are okay with the rest of The Things in the Menu System, then Nikon is your Camera.
Both the cameras give a joystick to go across through autofocus points.
And both the cameras are made of Magnesium Alloy, and it feels good in your hands.

Menu System
It felt for a long time that Canon was no More Innovating. But their Touchscreen Menu System changed everything for me.
And they have gotten so good at it that now I am a fan of their Menu System.
You can get to almost anywhere within two to three taps.
Also, you can Drag your Finger to go from one to another part of the Menu System.
Sections are Large and Responsive to touch very well.
Nikon also has a Decent Menu System but is not as Responsive as Canon.
The units are big and clean.
So, Canon Cameras have a Better Menu System than Nikon.
Viewfinder
Both cameras use the Same Optical Viewfinder. And I think Optical Viewfinders are Excellent for any Camera.
They are Fast and Accurate in Comparison to Electronic Viewfinders.
I have used both the cameras, and there is not much difference in the viewfinder.
Both the cameras have 100% coverage of the viewfinder.
Autofocus tracking works fine with Canon 5D Mark IV.
And with Nikon D850, it is smooth as well.
So to conclude, I found both cameras’ viewfinders to be equal.

Battery Life
Canon 5D Mark IV can take up to 900 Shots.
Or, if you want a timelapse video with an interval of 1 sec, you can have a Timelapse of 3 hours and 50 Minutes.
And I don’t see any Practical use of that Much Amount of Timelapse.
On the other hand, Nikon D850 can take up to 1850 Shots. And that is More than the Double 5D Mark IV.
So, Nikon D850 has a Longer Battery Life than 5D Mark IV.
Connectivity
In terms of connectivity, the Canon 5D Mark IV provides GPS, GLONASS, etc.
This is helpful for Wildlife Photographers. They can Click a Photo and gets the Location of the Photograph.
5D Mark IV also gives WiFi to Share your Photos directly to your Phone.
On the other hand, Nikon D850 provides No Navigation Service.
And that is a Downside for Wildlife Photographers or maybe Travelers as well.

I think the Nikon D850 is a Better Camera than Canon 5D Mark IV. But when you Take a Camera in your Hands, you Realize that Canon has hit the sweet spot.
It felt like the Nikon was Trying to Outperform the Canon to prove a point.
Nikon D850 is Not a Bad Camera. It can deliver 4K Without a Crop.
But other than that, there is nothing that Canon 5D Mark IV can not do.
I recommend you to take Canon 5D Mark IV for a Versatile Camera if you don’t Want 4K Videos.
But if 4K is Something you can’t give up, you should choose the Nikon D850.
