Canon EOS R6 Overview

Canon EOS R6 - Product Image - Front

The Canon EOS R6 is a Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera. It was Launched in the year 2020.

On the top, there are No Technological Advances. But, this Camera is for People looking for a Budget alternative to Canon EOS R5.

The Body is made up of Magnesium Alloy and Polycarbonate. It helps in making the R6 a Strong and Lightweight Option.

You get a Weather Sealed and Dust-Proof Body that makes it a Durable and long-term camera.

Let me give Some Overview of its Specs.

The Canon R6 is equipped with a 20 MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and DIGIC X Image Processor.

You get an ISO range of 100 to 102,400 that can be extended up to ISO 100 to 204,800. That Provides an Excellent Dynamic Range.

The EOS R6 also has a Continuous Shooting Speed of up to 20 FPS. That makes it a suitable Camera for Dynamic Photographers.

You can Record 4K Video at up to 60 FPS Without Crop. But, you can take up to 120 FPS in 1080p Resolution.

Talking about the AutoFocus System, you get Dual Pixel CMOS AF II that works with 1053 Autofocus Points. They help you focus on the Corners of your Shot.

R6 is one of the First in this Series to have a Sensor-Based Stabilization. It is Compatible with both Old and New Lenses.

The overall Metering Ability of EOS R6 is also Very Decent. You can also Recover UnderExposed and over OverExposed Photos Decently.

Apart from These main specs, this Camera is Ergonomically Easy to Handle.

It has a 3.0-Inch Free-Angle Tilting LCD. You can make it a Selfie Camera by Flipping the Screen. And Because of its Lightweight, it also becomes a Good Fit For Vlogging.

The Photo Quality of Canon EOS R6 is Excellent. It Delivers Excellent Quality in High ISO Photos and Low Light Conditions. Its Photo Quality is also Decent.

Canon EOS R6 Photo Quality

This section will talk about the Photo Quality of Canon EOS R6.

Sensor

Canon EOS R6 has a 24 Megapixels Full-Frame CMOS Sensor. Since it comes from Canon, You will love the Color Combination and the overall Image Quality.

There is Little to no Deviation from the Original Colors, especially the Skin Tones.

The Image Quality always Comes out Sharp and Clear. Although, you will Start to Lose Details at Higher Zoom.

Even at the Higher ISO, the Images are Crystal Clear. I usually don’t use high ISO, but I was impressed by how much you can Crank it up.

But, its Ability to Recover Underexposed and Overexposed Photos is more than Sufficient. At Times the Recovered Photos looked Unrealistic to me.

It also delivers Excellent Image Quality because of its Dynamic Range. And I think that it does the job pretty well.

Processor

Canon EOS R6 has an Excellent DIGIC X Image Processor. For a 20 Megapixels Sensor, DIGIC X is more than Sufficient.

The Speed of the Camera is pretty fast and helps solve the heating issues with extensive usage.

Another Aspect of a Powerful Processor is its Ability to Record Videos. And Canon R6 can Record Slow-Motion and 4K Videos.

DIGIC X Processor helps Canon R6 to have a Fast and More Precise Autofocus System. Along with the Ability to Continuous Shooting Speed up to 12 FPS.

Overall, the Canon R6’s Processor is Capable and Powerful to Handle and Extract Much out of its Sensor.

AutoFocus

Now let us talk about the Autofocus System of the Canon EOS R6.

Canon R6 uses Dual Pixel CMOS AF II System. It works with 1053 Autofocus Points, which are spread across the Sensor.

The Wide AF Points Allow you to Focus Anywhere on the Screen and its Corners. For me, the Autofocus performs impressively.

First, let me tell you about the Autofocus Performance in Still Photography.

The EOS R6 takes Advantage of Advanced Algorithms Learned with AI. It can easily Detect a Human’sHuman’s Eye, Face, and Head.

And for Animals, the Autofocus can Detect the Eyes, Faces, and Bodies pretty accurately. That makes Wildlife Photography Easier than Before.

It helps you capture unpredictable moments in the wild with a sharp focus.

Sometimes, the Wildlife Photographers have problems focusing on a bird. The quick solution is to Restart the Autofocus System or have an Autofocus Preset.

The Second is the ability to Focus on Video Mode. The Canon R6 has one of the Best Dual-Pixel Autofocus technologies.

You can Lock on to a Subject, and the Camera will track it Effortlessly. Although, there is some amount of Learning Curve in its Autofocus System.

But anyway, You can check out the Guides and Tutorials to see How to use this Autofocus Efficiently.

Now, let’s talk about the AutoFocus in Burst Mode.

The R6 comes with a Continuous Shooting Speed of about 20 FPS. But, there is a Tiny Lag in its Initial Frame to Lock on to its Subject.

But, once it locks onto the Subject, all the Frames are Sharp and on Point.

Along with these Three, the Autofocus of R6 performs Excellently in Low-Light. Sometimes, It gets confused Between the Eye and Body of a Bird in Low Light.

Apart from that, the Autofocus of Canon EOS R6 Performs Excellently.

Image Stabilization

The Canon EOS R6 provides you with 5-Axis Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization System. And it is the First EOS R Series Camera to have Image Stabilization on the Sensor.

But is it any good?

Well, for Still Photographs, the Image Stabilization works Decently. It Compensates for Vibrations from your Hands while Taking a Photo.

But in the Video, the stabilization is more than enough. Least to say that it is useable.

If you walk with Holding this Camera Single-Handedly, you will find that your Videos have Jerks.

I would suggest you use a Gimbal if you are Planning to Vlog on this Camera. R6 does not Provide you with Best Industry-Level Stabilization.

You can use the Video if you are Walking on a Smooth Road.

But, your videos will have jerks if you Walk on uneven Terrain or on a Windy Day.

Overall, the Image Stabilization performs decently and is useable for Casual Camera Users. But I would Recommend Professionals to use Tripods and Gimbals.

Shooting Speed

When it comes to Speed, the Canon EOS R6 is Very Impressive.

With Mechanical Shutter, it can shoot up to 12 FPS for up to 1000 Frames in JPEG and 240 Frames in RAW.

With Electronic Shutter, it can shoot up to 20 FPS for up to 1000 Frames in JPEG and 240 Frames in RAW.

Those Speeds are Useful for Dynamic Photographers. The Autofocus System also works Excellently in Burst Mode. It never Loses the Subject once it locks on to it.

Even in Low Light Conditions, the Autofocus in Burst Mode is Excellent.

Its Silent Shutter Feature will help you get unexpected and candid shots without making any shutter noise.

The Canon EOS R6 Performs Excellently and Effortlessly in Continuous Shooting Mode.

Exposure

For Photos, R6 has an ISO Range from 100 to 102,400 that can be extended up to ISO 100 to 204,800.

For Videos. R6 has an ISO Range of 100 to 25,600 that can be extended up to ISO 100 to 204,800.

That helps Canon EOS R6 to have a Wide Dynamic Range, Excellent Low-Light Ability, and Decent Exposure Recovery.

Although, when you pass 52400 ISO, you will notice some noise in the photo. But, it is useable for any casual user.

The Colors and Contrast Come out Close to the Natural Colors of the Subject. I have Extensively used this Camera in Low Light to Test it to its Limit. And the Camera balanced the Shadows and Highlights very well.

There was little to no Graining in Dark Spots until the 6400 ISO. After that, you start to see grains.

The EOS R6 can also Recover Underexposed Photos until Four Stops. And it can Recover an Overexposed Photo until three Stops. The Recovery Results were more than the expectation.

Overall, the Canon EOS R6 is a Camera that can Shoot Excellent Videos and Photos in Low Light.

Canon EOS R6 Video Quality

This section will talk about the Video Quality of Canon EOS R6.

4K Video

The Canon EOS R6 can record Ultra HD 4K Videos at up to 60 FPS. It can Record a 4K Video with 10-bit and 8-bit Color Depths.

But, there are Two Modes to Record 4K in this Camera. The one with the Crop and the other one without the Crop.

Again, There are Two Stabilization Modes in 4K.

The First is the “Normal” Stabilization. It applies a 1.19x Crop to the Video.

And the Second is the Enhanced Stabilization mode that applies 1.52x Crop to the Video.

But, the Quality of Enhanced Stabilization is not Worth Giving up the Cropped part. And the Autofocus is Still Fast and Accurate in 4K. But, as always, the 4K produces a Large File Size.

Some users have also complained about the heating issues while shooting in 4K at 60 FPS. Although, there were Some Improvements after a Firmware Update.

Otherwise, you can use an External Recorder with Canon EOS R6 to Record without Heating Issues.

Full HD Videos

The Canon EOS R6 can Record 1080p at a Max of 120 FPS with 10-Bit and 8-Bit Color Depths. You will love the Quality of Full HD Videos.

And thanks to its DIGIC X Processor, the Autofocus works Blazingly Fast and Accurately in Full HD Video Mode.

The Full HD Video Quality is Decent in Low Light as well. Also, the Noise Reduction ability of the Camera Shows in Low-Light and Slow-Motion Videos.

And its Autofocus Systems will help you Track your Subject in Slow-Motion Effortlessly. I have not Experienced any Overheating While Recording in 1080p.

I still recommend you to take Multiple Batteries and a Charger to Shoot Cinematic Shots in an Event.

Vlogging

Canon EOS R6 is one of the Best Mirrorless Cameras for Vlogging. The Price is not too high and tends to be a complete Value For Money Camera.

It has a 20 Megapixels Resolution Full-Frame Sensor.

First, Let me tell you about its Ergonomics. You will feel that its Grip is more like a DSLR camera. It is a Light, Strong, and Well-Built Camera with Weather Sealing.

You can take this Camera in Harsh Conditions, and it will Perform at its Best.

You will love the Button Layout on the Camera. It feels more Intuitive and turns out to be a Beginner-Friendly Camera.

Because the Camera is Compact, it is Easier to carry and Travel-with. Apart from Ergonomics, its Fully Articulating Screen will help you Convert this Camera into a Selfie Camera.

Its Menu System is also Easy and Nicely Organized.

R6 has Excellent Noise-Reduction, and Autofocus Abilities in Video Mode. You will Rarely have Problems with its Autofocus System.

And you can also Record Gorgeous Videos in Low-Light with its Wide Dynamic Range and Noise Reduction ability.

Audio

The Canon EOS R6 can Record Audio in Two Formats. One being the AAC Format and the other being the LPCM Format.

The Audio Quality of both Formats is Loud and Clear. Some people faced the Issue of Buzzing Sound with the In-Built Mic of the Camera.

The Canon R6 can Handle Audio in Windy Situations Very Well. And you can also Record Audio in a Crowded Place with its In-Built Camera.

I Recommend Buying an External Mic if you want to use the Audio for Production Purposes.

Canon EOS R6 Features

This section will talk about the features of Canon EOS R6.

Weight & Portability

The First is its Weight. Canon EOS R6 is a Relatively Compact Camera that offers a Deep Grip. It only Weighs about 680 Grams or 1.49 pounds with its Battery and Memory Cards.

Its Dimensions are 5.43 x 3.84 x 3.48 inches.

The Second is its Portability. Whether you are Traveling to a Far Place or Commuting on Daily Routines,

You can Easily Carry the Camera in your Backpack along with other essentials. And if you are going for a trip, you won’t even feel its weight.

The Canon EOS R6 is a camera that supports your Portability.

Build Quality

Canon EOS R6 is built with Magnesium Alloy and Polycarbonate. But, Most of the Camera is Polycarbonate, including the Buttons and Dials.

You might still feel some plastic feeling. But Canon had to do it to keep the Camera Lightweight.

And Despite being much of the Area Made of Polycarbonate, the Camera is Durable.

It also has Weather-Sealing. You can use this Camera in the Rain, but I recommend not Taking out the Camera in Harsh Conditions.

Ergonomics & Comfort

The Canon improved a lot on old Ergonomics and Implemented that into the EOS R6. Ergonomically, it might seem like a step back in Some places and a Step Forward in others.

Starting with the Top Section of the Camera, the Canon has replaced the Top Status Display with a Dial.

The Dial is Situated Right Next to the Menu Dial. But the Joystick is Back. The Joystick is near a Dial used to Adjust Menu Settings.

And the Canon EOS R6 only has a Single Custom Function Assigning Button. There is a Separate Autofocus and Video Record Button.

In terms of comfort, the Canon EOS R6 has a Deep Grip as an Excellent DSLR Camera. It is Well Balanced and Easy to Hold for Long Sessions.

The Canon EOS R6 has a Beginner-Friendly Menu System. There is No Doubt that Canon does Pretty Well in its User Interface.

You can also use the Dial to go Through Settings. The Canon R6 has all the Good Qualities of its Predecessors related to the Menu System.

It Only Takes a Couple of Buttons to Navigate to any Desired Setting.

The Layout of Menu Items is Very Decent and Intuitive. New Users can Easily Learn the Menu System.

Viewfinder

The Canon EOS R6 uses an Electronic Viewfinder. It has a 0.5-inch OLED Screen with 3.69 Million Dots for Resolution.

As you already know, an EVF has many advantages over an OVF. But to list a few, the EVF can show more details like Histograms.

And you can clearly view your Composition in Low Light with an EVF. It also allows you to see what your shot will look like while playing with the settings.

Some Cameras might have an EVF Issue of Flickering and Black Out. If that issue bothers you, simply contact the Canon, and they will fix it.

Overall, the EVF of EOS R6 has no issues on a Larger Portion of the Cameras.

Screen

The Canon EOS R6 provides you with a 3.0-inch Touchscreen LCD. It is a Fully Articulating Screen to help you take Difficult Angled Shot Easily. And comes out as a Good Feature for Vloggers and Streamers.

Another Highlight of the Display is its Refresh Rate. The Canon R6 offers you a Refresh Rate of about 120 FPS.

That helps it to Prevent Blackout in Continuous Shooting Mode. Apart from these, there is No Automatic Brightness Control. Another thing is that it does not have an Anti-Reflection Coating.

Battery Life

The Canon EOS R6 uses an LPE-6NH Battery. This New Battery gives the Camera the Ability to take about 510 Shots.

And Because This Battery is compatible with all the Previous Generation Cameras, it is also Compatible with their Chargers.

The 510 Shots are in Power Saving Mode, without a Live View.

While using Live View, the number comes down to 320 Shots.

Overall, this New and Cross-Compatible Battery can perform better than its Predecessors.

Connectivity

The Canon EOS R6 offers you Two Connectivity Options. One is the Bluetooth, and the other is Wi-Fi.

You don’t get GPS Connectivity with this Camera.

Also, Some Users have to claim to face connectivity problems. In that Case, Restarting both Devices can be a quick fix.

Except for this issue, I faced no Problem Connecting my Phone with the Canon Connect App. But, I should say that Canon Connect needs many improvements in terms of its UI.
