Canon EOS RP Overview

The Canon EOS RP is one of the Best Budget Mirrorless Cameras. It’s a great Starter Camera for people Getting started with Photography and Videography.

With 26.2MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 8 Image Processor, the Camera captures the Best Image Quality Possible. 

The overall image quality is impressive; it still feels like to am missing out on Dynamic Range. Also, the autofocus system is very fast and accurate. It never fails to amaze you. 

You can record Ultra HD 4K Videos at up to 25 Frames Per Second. The Video Quality is also very sharp and comes out to be very natural. 

With a 3 Inches Vari Angle Touchscreen LCD, the Canon RP becomes easy to use and operate. 

Overall, Canon EOS RP is the Best Pocket-Friendly Mirrorless Camera by Canon.

Sensor

The Canon EOS RP has a 26.2 Megapixel Full-Frame CMOS Sensor. It also comes with the Dual-Pixel Technology that helps capture the Best Colors.

There are Four Areas to consider when you want to Measure a Sensor’s Performance.

• Colours
• Dynamic Range
• Low-Light Performance
• And the Overall Image Quality.

First, let me tell you about its Colors. Canon has one of the Best Color Science in the Market. EOS RP will Always get Close to Natural Colors. 

The Colors are Crisp, and the Skin Tones are not Unnecessarily Bright or Dim.

So, its Overall Color Sensitivity is Decent.

The Second is the Low Light Performance of the Sensor. Canon EOS RP Performs Excellently in Low Light.

I have tried EOS RP, and the results were Impressive Considering its Old Sensor. The Camera has Excellent High ISO Performance.

And it has Decent Noise Reduction ability thanks to its Processor and Dual-Pixel Technology.

The Camera can pick up Colors from 400 ISO to 12,800 ISO-ish. And the Low Light Image was useable up to 12,800 ISO. You can notice some grains after 12,800 ISO, and the Image Gets Useless above 25,600.

The Third is its Dynamic Range. With EOS RP’s Average Dynamic Range, It Becomes Difficult to Push Shadows and Highlights.

As a result, the Raw files sometimes become unusable for Professionals.

And the Fourth is the Image Quality of the Sensor. Canon RP does the Job pretty well with the Full-Frame Sensor Camera to Produce High-Resolution Images. 

So, the Sensor of Canon EOS RP has Decent Low Light Performance, Resolution, and Color Science.

Processor

The Canon EOS RP Features a DIGIC 8 Image Processor. The Processor is Responsible for Pretty Much Everything that your Camera does.

4 Main things Controlled by Processor are given below.

• Stabilization
• Autofocus
• Buffer Size
• And Noise Reduction.

I will talk about all of these Later. But in this Section, I want to talk about its Noise Reduction Ability and Write Speed.

Canon EOS RP has Impressive Noise Reduction Ability. With the Pros of a Full-Frame Sensor, one of the Cons is Graining.

And the Camera Handles Graining in Low Light Pretty Well. But, it does Poorly in the Lower ISO Range.

As a result, You will Struggle a Lot while Taking Sunrise Photos. I have talked about this a little more in the Exposure Section below.

Now Let us Talk About its Write Speeds. The Canon EOS RP only Features a Single Card Slot. And that is a UHS-II Card Slot.

As a result, you will get Decent Write Speeds. It can Write a 4K video at the Bit Rate of 60 Mb/s. And I Recommend using V60 Cards or UHS-II Sandisk Cards.

The Processor is a bit old but can still do the Job for a Casual User.

AutoFocus

Canon EOS RP comes with Dual Pixel CMOS AF System that covers 4779-Phase Detection Points. The Autofocus Performance of this Camera is Decent. 

You can Focus on a 100% Vertical Span. But, you can only Focus on a 88% Horizontal Span. 

There are Three Areas to Test the Autofocus:

• Portrait
• Continuous Shooting
• and Video Recording

The First is Portrait Photography. The EOS RP is very impressive while doing Portrait Photography.

Sometimes with Poor Dynamic Range, the Eye AF may have Problems. 

In Continuous Shooting Mode, you will Get Some Completely Out-Of-Focus Frames. And the Reason is its Lagging Autofocus System.

The Autofocus System of Canon RP is Quite Slow. It can keep with Slow-Moving or Stationary Subjects. 

You can Easily see the Box Trying to follow your Face by Lagging in the Video. And the Autofocus Keeps Slowing Down as you Increase the Resolution and Frame Rates. 

So, the Autofocus of this Camera is only for Casual Users or Entry-Level Fashion Photographers.

Image Stabilization

The Canon EOS RP does not Offer In-Body Stabilization. It provides you with Only Digital Stabilization in Video Mode Only.

The Video Stabilization performance of Canon RP is Decent. It is Better than Expected at this Price Point.

You will not see any wrapping or wobbling Effect using Stabilization in a Video. If you are a Travel Vlogger, you may consider carrying the Gimbal.

Because this Camera is Light and Small, you can get a Better Grip on it. And Essentially, that helps you to have Better Control while Recording Yourself.

Shooting Speed

The Canon EOS RP can shoot up to 5 FPS for up to 50 Frames RAW and Unlimited Frames in JPEG.  

The Overall Shooting Speed is Average, So I don’t think it is a worthy option for Dynamic Photography. 

Exposure

Exposure depends on an ISO Sensitivity and the Shutter Speed of a Camera. 

For Photography, the Canon RP comes with an ISO range of 100 to 40,000 that can extend up to ISO 50 to 102,400.

For Videography, the Canon RP comes with an ISO range of 100 to 25,600 that can extend up to ISO 100 to 102,400.

You also get a metering range of -3 to 20 EV. As a result, you Get Excellent Low-Light Performance. The Camera Excels in the High ISO Range.

The EOS RP does not have a Decent Dynamic Range. So, the Camera struggles with maintaining Contrast, Highlight and Shadows.

Overall, the Canon EOS RP can handle Low-Light Situations pretty well.

4K Video

Canon EOS RP can Record a 4K video at up to 25 FPS. But, it applies a 1.75x Crop to the 4K Video.

While shooting a 4K Video, you Lose the Dual-Pixel Autofocus System. As a result, it Becomes Difficult to Shoot 4K Videos.

While shooting Video, the Camera Does not Focus Effectively on the Subject. It Keeps flickering between the Subject and the background.

Full HD Video

The Canon EOS RP can Record a Full HD video at up to 60 FPS. You Get the Dual-Pixel Autofocus System. 

But, the Camera has a Poor Dynamic Range. As a result, it Becomes Difficult to Shoot 1080p Video in Low Light.

The Camera can Focus Decently on the Subject. Autofocus has Little to No Lag if you Shoot at Lower Frame Rates.

The Stabilization System also Works Decently. But at Higher Frame Rates, I recommend you use a Gimbal.

The Video Quality of Full HD in all Frame Rates is Sharp and Clear. 

Vlogging

The Canon EOS RP can be your First Vlogging Camera. 

Let us start with the Ergonomics. The Camera is Compact and Lightweight. The Canon made this Camera of the right size to fit it in your hands.

It is Easy to Carry and will Take Less Space in your Backpack. And much of the body is made of Polycarbonate. So, it Feels Plasticky.

It also has a Fully Articulating Screen to use this Camera as a Selfie Camera. And it is a Touch-Enabled Screen. So, you can Easily Navigate through the Menu with it.

Also, You can Control the Focus Area with a Tap on the Screen. The Button’s Layout is also Excellent.

And you can Access Many Features with a Click of a Button. That makes it a very Beginner-Friendly and User-Friendly Camera.

The Second is its Video Quality. The Canon RP shoots an Average 4K Video. And it also Does not Provide you with any Slow-Motion Ability. But in any way, you can try shooting Full HD Videos at 60 FPS for the Best Use of the Camera. 

And there is One Tiny Problem, its Battery.

Because it has a Low-Capacity Battery, you will need to Carry Extra Batteries as a Backup while Vlogging.

Audio Quality

The Canon EOS RP Outputs Audio in AAC Audio and LPCM Audio. That is Excellent Considering the Price Point. The Audio Quality is also Very Decent as Well.

It would be best if you used an External Mic in Windy Conditions. Apart from that, there is no problem using its Original Audio.

There is not much to say about its audio. But if you are a Vlogger, I recommend Always using an External Mic.

A Tip for Better Audio Quality in the Manual is to Keep your Gain Below 25%. Otherwise, there will be a Lot of Noise in the Background.

Weight

The Canon EOS RP is Made-Up with Aluminum, Magnesium Alloy, and Polycarbonate. But, Most of the Body is Made-Up of Polycarbonate.

And it is a Mirrorless Camera with a Small Body Dimension of 5.2 x 3.3 x 2.8-inches. That Leads to its Ultra-Light Bodyweight of only 485 Grams with Battery and Card.

That is a Light Weight Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera. You can Easily Strap it Around your Neck Without any Neck Pain Worries.

And if you are Doing Portrait Photography, you can hand Hold the Camera for a Long Time. You won’t Feel much of its Weight in your Backpack as Well.

Overall, Canon RP is a Small and Lightweight Camera.

Build Quality

A Large Portion of the Canon EOS RP is Made-Up of Polycarbonate. But, its Dials are Made-Up of Metal. And the Weather Sealing on this Camera is also Very Decent.

But, You should Avoid Using it in Heavy Rains. EOS RP is a Well-Built Camera at its Price Point.

Overall the Camera Feels Sturdy, and its Build Quality is Decent. 

Ergonomics/Comfort

The Canon EOS RP inherits Ergonomics from its other Companions. So, its Ergonomics are Excellent Without a Doubt.

The Layout of the Buttons is Very Intuitive and Easy To Learn. But, there is No Top Status Display on this Camera.

Instead, You will Find an Extra Dial that has Modes on it. And all of its Functions are Pretty much out there.

The Grip is Deep. But People with Big Hands can only fit Three Fingers into it. The Metal Dials make it Feel Premium.

And you will Miss the Joystick because there is no Joystick on the Camera. There are only Dials and Buttons on this Camera.

But, Canon RP is a User and Beginner Friendly Camera. You will Feel it is Easy to get started with this Camera.

Menu System

The Canon EOS RP has an Easy-To-Navigate Menu System. You Can use a Touchscreen to Navigate through the Menu.

And Since the Camera does not have Too Many Features, it has a Small Menu. All the Items you Need are Grouped Very Nicely.

You will have No Problem using its Menu System if you are Already a Canon user. And even if it’s your First Camera, you will learn where to find the Desired Function.

The Colors used in its Menu System are Contrasting and make it easier to read. 

Overall, this Camera has the Easiest Menu System I have used.

Viewfinder

The Canon EOS RP has an Electronic Viewfinder with a 2.36m-Dot OLED Screen. There are downsides to it as well. 

The Refresh Rate on EOS RP is only 60 Hz. And if you think that is fine, then let me tell you it is not.

Because with Lower Refresh Rate comes other problems. When Shooting in Continuous Shooting Mode, the EVF will Blackout Substantially.

That makes it Much Harder to Capture your Desired Action. It was Supposed to be a Decent Viewfinder, and it does the job. 

Overall, I Feel Grateful that Canon even provided an EVF at that Price Point.

Screen/Display

The Canon EOS RP Features a 3.0-inch Fully Articulating Touchscreen. It has a Decent Resolution of 1.04 Million Dots.

And you get Five Different Brightness Levels. You can adjust as much as you want, but you will Need Shade to See in Bright Sunlight.

Its Articulation is an Excellent Feature. For it lets you Take Photos at Any Angle you want. You get a lot of Shortcuts on the Touch Interface that Compensates for its Downsides.

Battery Life

The Canon EOS RP has a Battery Life of 250 Shots. And if you use this Camera only to Click Photos, you can get around an Hour of the Photo Sessions.

That is not a Large Number because a Drained Battery will Affect Some of the Camera’s Performance.

For Example, after Draining to a Level, the Continuous Frame Rate will Reduce to 2.5 FPS. And also, Temperature plays an Important Role.

You should always keep one extra Battery if you use it for an event.

Connectivity

The Canon EOS RP offers you File Transfers with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. You can use the Canon Connect App to use this Camera Remotely.

The Wireless Connection will Drain the Battery Fast. So, you have to be careful while using this Camera Remotely.

The Canon RP does not provide you with GPS. So if you are Wildlife Photographer who Needs a GPS for some reason, then you may use an External Accessory.

Canon EOS R7

The Canon EOS R7 is a Mirrorless Camera with a Cropped APS-C CMOS Sensor. Let me start with its Photo Quality.

R7 has a 32.5 Megapixel Resolution Sensor. It helps in capturing Detailed and Sharp Images.

Canon EOS R

The Canon EOS R is a Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera. It has a CMOS Sensor of 30.3-Megapixels Resolution that helps the Camera Great Colors and Skin Tones.

A DIGIC 8 Image Processor processes the Information. With its Decent Noise Reduction Ability, the Processor Helps this Camera with Advanced Focus Technology.

Canon R has a Dual-Pixel Autofocus System with about 5655 Autofocus Points. It helps this Camera Stay Locked on your Subject in a Fast-Moving World.

Its ISO Range from 100 to 40,000 helps this Camera perform Excellently in Low-Light Conditions.

Also, the Processor helps Canon R Achieve a Continuous Shooting Speed of up to 8 FPS. Sadly, the Camera does not support IBIS. But, there is Digital Image Stabilization in Video Mode Only.

Nikon Z6 II

The Nikon Z6 II is a Mirrorless Camera with a 24.5 MP FX-Format BSI CMOS Sensor. The Sensor can perform well in Low Light Conditions and Delivers Detailed Photos with Great Depth-Of-Field.

The Dual EXPEED 6 Image Processors help Nikon Z6 II Reduce Noise and provide a Wide Dynamic Range.

You get an ISO Range of the Nikon Z6 II from 100 to 51200 for Video and Photos. The 273 Autofocus Points help the Camera keep the Subject Focused even at Fast Shooting Speeds.

Sony A7 III

The Sony A7 III is a Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera. It comes with a 24 MP Exmor R CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Image Processor.

The Combination of those produces an Excellent Photography Camera. The Sony A7III has Decent Noise Reduction Ability and Low Light Performance.

And it has about 693 Phase-Detection Points and 425 Contrast-Detection Points. That helps Focus the Subject even at a Max Shooting Speed of 10 FPS.

A7 III has an ISO Range from 100 to 25600 for Photos and Videos. And you can Extend that for Photos up to 50 to 25600. That helps in getting a Wide Dynamic Range.

Despite that, Sony A7III Performs Excellently in Low Light Conditions. And for Videos, the BIONZ X Image Processor helps Record 4K at 30 FPS and Full HD Videos at up to 120 FPS.

It has a 3.0-inch tilting touchscreen LCD. Also, the Magnesium Alloy Weather-Sealed Body Weighs only 650 Grams.

Fujifilm X-T4

The Fujifilm X-T4 is a Mirrorless Camera with 26.1 MP APS-C X-Trans BSI CMOS. And it has an X-Processor 4 Image Processor that helps it Process Beautiful and Sharp Photos.

The Fujifilm X-T4 has Decent Noise Reduction and Low Light Performance. And it provides you 5-Axis IBIS to Stay Focused on your Subject.

For that, the Camera has about 425 Phase-Detection Points. That Autofocus does not let the Subject get out of Focus, Even at Fast Continuous Speeds.

With a Mechanical Shutter, it can Shoot Continuously at up to 15 FPS. And 30 FPS with an Electronic Shutter.

And For Video, the Camera Can Record 4K at up to 60 FPS. It can Record 1080p Resolution Videos at up to 240 FPS.

Also, the Performance of Fujifilm X-T4 in Low-Light Videos is Excellent. You can Record these High-Quality and Sharp Videos.

The camera also features a 3.0-inch Fully Articulating Touchscreen LCD to Record Vlogs. Despite all that Power, the X-T4 only Weighs 526 Grams.

The Fujifilm X-T4 is a Powerful, Lightweight Camera Best Suited for Event Photographers.

Panasonic Lumix S5

The Panasonic Lumix S5 is a Full-Frame 24.2 MP Mirrorless Camera with a CMOS Sensor. And it can Capture Excellent Photos with Decent Contrast and Depth-Of-Field.

S5 has a Powerful Processor that Allows Fast and Accurate Autofocus with an Excellent Dynamic Range.

It has about 225 Contrast-Detection Points to help you keep your Subject in Focus. Also, the Performance of the Autofocus is Decent.

It has an ISO Range from 100 to 51200 that can extend up to ISO 50 to 204,800. That Helps the Camera get a Wide Dynamic Range and Decent Metering Range from 0 to 18 EV. 

The Processor-Sensor Combination allows it to be a Decent Video Camera.

S5 can Record 4K at up to 60 FPS in 8-Bit Color Depth. It can also shoot Full HD Videos at up to 180 FPS.

The Rechargeable Battery Allows it to Click 440 Shots. S5 also Provides a 3.0-inch Fully Articulating Touchscreen LCD.

Nikon Z6

The Nikon Z6 is a Mirrorless Camera with a 24.5 MP FX-Format BSI CMOS Sensor. And an EXPEED 6 Image Processor.

That Combination produces Beautiful, Sharp, Clear Photos with Decent Colors and Skin Tones. The Processor helps the Camera with Decent Noise Reduction in Low Light Conditions.

It also Helps the Camera to have Fast and Accurate Autofocus with 273 Phase-Detection Points.

These Autofocus Points cover all the Composition Areas and Keep the Focus on the Subject at High Shooting Speeds.

The Nikon Z6 has a Continuous Shooting Speed of 12 FPS. That is Considered Decent for a Sports or Action Camera.

For Videos, the Nikon Z6 can Record 4K at 30 FPS. And it can Record Full HD Videos at up to 120 FPS.

The Autofocus Excellently works while Recording Videos in 4K and Full HD. 

It also has Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization System. That Allows the Camera to Compensate for Some Vibrations.

Sadly, the Nikon Z6 only has a 3.2-inch Tilting Touchscreen LCD and a Top Status Display.

Loaded with All These Features, the Nikon Z6 only Weighs 585 Grams.

Nikon Z5

The Nikon Z5 is a Mirrorless Camera with a 24.3 MP FX-Format CMOS Sensor. It captures Beautiful Colors that its EXPEED 6 Image Processor processes.

The Processor allows a Decent Noise Reduction and an ISO Range from 100 to 51200 for photos. And you can Extend that up to 50 to 102400.

It only has an ISO Range from 100 to 25600 for Video. Despite that, it can Provide Excellent Low-Light Performance.

The Camera can Shoot at a Max Speed of just 4.5 FPS. For Videos, The Camera can Record 4K Videos at up to 30 FPS.

And it can Record Full HD Videos at up to 60 FPS. 

It also has a 3.2-Inch Tilting Touchscreen LCD.

The Nikon Z5 is a Lightweight Camera with a Magnesium Alloy Body Weighing only 590 Grams. 

Canon EOS M6 Mark II

The Canon EOS M6 Mark II is a mirrorless camera with a 32.5 MP APS-C CMOS Sensor. It has a DIGIC 8 Image Processor. The Camera has Decent Noise Reduction and Low-Light Performance.

The M6 Mark II is a Camera that Allows Fast and Accurate Focus with Excellent Colors and Skin Tones.

It has around 5481 Autofocus Points Spread Across the Composition so that you can Focus on the Corners.

This Autofocus also works Excellently at a Fast Shooting Speed of 14 FPS. But, the Canon EOS M6 Mark II does not Offer you IBIS. The Camera only has Digital Stabilization for Video Mode.

The Camera can Record 4K Video at up to 30 FPS. It can also Record Full HD Videos at up to 120 FPS.

You also get a 3.0-Inch Tilting Touchscreen LCD. The Canon EOS M6 Mark II has a Magnesium Alloy and Polycarbonate Body.

This Camera is Lightweight, Well Built, and Powerful.

Panasonic Lumix GH5 II

The Panasonic Lumix GH5 II is a 20.3 MP Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera with a Live MOS Sensor with AR (anti-reflective) Coating.

It can Capture Excellent Photos with Decent Contrast and Depth-Of-Field. Lumix GH5 II has a Powerful Processor that Allows Fast and Accurate Autofocus.

The Camera has about 225 Contrast-Detection Points to help you keep your Subject in Focus.

Although, the Performance of the Autofocus is Decent. You get an ISO range of 200 to 25600 that can extend up to ISO 100 to 25600.

It can Record 6K & 4K at up to 60 FPS in 10-bit colour depth. You can also Record 1080p Resolution Videos at up to 60 FPS.

GH5 II also provides a 3.0-inch Free-Angle Tilting Touchscreen LCD.
